According to WKRN, Chris Appleby faces four criminal charges after police officials executed a search warrant. Detectives told the news outlet that they received complaints from other members of the Amish community about Appleby. Detective Jason Jantke declined to get into specifics about what those complaints entailed but said they were enough to investigate and secure a search warrant when they found probable cause. Jantke said he and his partners were shocked when they searched his home....

Authorities from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (LASD) said they were “unable to solicit a response” from an unnamed barricaded man despite “several hours and many verbal attempts” to negotiate on Thursday morning. The man was later found dead “with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound,” according to an LASD release. A portion of Hollywood’s nearby 101 freeway was closed after Sheriff’s deputies heard what sounded like a gunshot when they knocked on the man’s door to serve him with the eviction notice around 7 a....

In Stone Mountain, Georgia, a few dozen right-wing demonstrators carrying Confederate flags and guns gathered, ABC News reported.The demonstrators were led by a group from Arkansas called Confederate States III%. They had applied for a permit to gather at Stone Mountain Park, which features large carvings of Confederate President Jefferson Davis and Confederate military leaders Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson. Their permit was denied over concerns of possible violence....

Fruitland Police Chief J.D. Huff said during a news conference Thursday that the search for Michael won’t stop until the boy is found. Huff said no headway has been made despite exhaustive ground searches in a two-mile radius of the family home over the past few months with the use of search dogs, drones, helicopters, local homeowners and several law enforcement agencies. That increases the likelihood that Michael was abducted, Huff said....

Fossilized flowers are very rare, but in a study published in the journal Nature Scientific Reports, researchers in Berlin and Vienna identified a 40-million-year-old flower, preserved in amber resin, by extracting its pollen. “In general, plant inclusions in amber are rarer than animal inclusions,” Eva-Maria Sadowski, who led the study, told Newsweek. “For Baltic amber, only 1 to 3 percent of all inclusions are of botanical origin. This means finding a plant inclusion in amber that is exquisitely preserved and as large as the flower of this study is exceptional....

The first ecumenical summit bringing together celebrities from different Christian backgrounds and disciplines will be held in Vatican City from August 31 to September 1. On the eve of Indigenous Peoples Day, as Portland has traded Columbus Day for, a group of about 300 people ventured downtown intent on “criminal acts of violence and mayhem,” Police Chief Chuck Lovell said. In an event marketed as the Indigenous Peoples “Day of Rage,” the group used straps, chains and a vehicle to tear down statues of Presidents Abraham Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt. They also damaged buildings and threw flares into the Oregon Historical Society building....

Social media videos show police clashing with protesters, including one video where several officers charge at demonstrators. In the clip, an officer appears to push a man down and drag him on the ground before kicking a smoke canister at him. The event started at Laurelhurst Park in South East Portland, where a group of protesters met at a vigil for Daunte Wright. At around 10.30 p.m. on Monday, a riot was declared by Portland Police at the Penumbra Kelly building in the East Burnside after protesters broke windows, threw rocks at police, and lit a dumpster on fire....

According to Portland Police officials, the city’s Justice Center was attacked amid a riot against the killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis earlier this week. Five arrests have been made at the time of writing. The Oregonian said protests took a turn shortly after 11 p.m. local time, when some taking part in the demonstration marched on the Multonomah County Justice Center and attacked an office. Riot police were later sent into the area to disperse protesters with tear gas and stun grenades, the newspaper reported....

Around 400 people had gathered outside the Portland Police Association building, on N. Lombard Street, at around 10:30 p.m. on Saturday night, The Oregonian reported, after rallies that were held earlier in the day throughout the city. The union building, about five miles north of the Mark O. Hatfield United States Courthouse which had been the target of nightly protests for several weeks, has become the scene of clashes between police and protesters in recent days....
