The Concord Police Department said the suspect in the Wednesday shooting had also died. The suspect was armed, according to a tweet posted by the police department early Thursday. The officer-involved shooting took place in Gateway Lane near Speedway Boulevard. One officer died while another sustained injuries that are not life-threatening, police said. “With a heavy heart, we confirm that two Concord Police Officers were involved in an incident resulting in the tragic loss of a CPD officer,” the police department said on Twitter....

Officers were called to the 3500 block of Blanche Avenue in the city at around 4.30 p.m. on Saturday after the man was seen there with a rifle slung over his back, Cleveland Heights police chief Annette Mecklenburg said in a news release. “Officers also spoke to witnesses who had notified the Police Department. While speaking with observers, at no time did anyone confirm that the man acted unlawfully making threats or pointing the rifle at any person,” Mecklenburg said....

The Batavia Police Department in upstate New York on Tuesday joined hundreds of local law enforcement agencies in asking both potential victims and concerned residents to report allegations of unemployment benefit fraud directly to the state’s Department of Labor. Police in Avon Lake, Ohio, in Whitman, Massachusetts, and in Evanston, Illinois, say frustrated taxpayers have called or even shown up at the station holding 1099-G tax forms which show someone is fraudulently reporting income in their name....

The Afghan parents and their four children arrived near Warsaw at a quarantine center in Podkowa Lesna on August 23. The family allegedly found death cap mushrooms in a nearby forest and used them to make a soup, causing their poisonings. One of the children, a 5 year-old-boy, died from the soup. A 17-year-old girl was treated and said to be in stable condition. Doctors said the mushrooms are less deadly to adults due to their larger body mass....

Nicholas DiMarzio, who led the Brooklyn diocese for nearly two decades, officially stepped down from his role on Wednesday. DiMarzio, 77, submitted his resignation two years ago upon turning 75—the date required by Canon Law for bishops to resign, also considered retirement. Francis also named Robert Brennan as the eighth bishop of Brooklyn. Brennan, a Bronx native, was ordained in Rockville Center, New York, and previously led the diocese in Columbus, Ohio....

The City Council unanimously approved the money to Stoyanoff, 40, of Vancouver, Washington, who sued the police, saying he was arrested on September 28, 2020, due to his refusal to hand over a “Vote Register Here” sign he held in a protest in Portland’s Kenton Park supporting the Black Lives Matter movement, according to The Oregonian/OregonLive. The sign Stoyanoff was holding was on a lightweight three-quarter-inch PVC pipe and was made out of cardboard and paper, according to his lawsuit, The Oregonian/OregonLive also reported....

The unoccupied Portland Police patrol vehicle had been parked in a city fleet parking lot in the 800 block of North Graham Street when the blaze broke out, Portland Police said in a news release. Officers responded to the parking lot after a report of a vehicle on fire at around 8.20 p.m. on Saturday, police said. Portland Fire and Rescue also responded and extinguished the flames. The cause of the fire is under investigation, but arson is suspected, according to police....
