Charm Sullivan, 17, was working behind the counter at the McDonald’s restaurant on Broad Street and Hunting Park on Wednesday night when the incident unfolded, her cousin Khadijah Lovett told NBC Philadelphia. A statement from the Aeropuerto Ecológico Galápagos located on Isla Baltra—one of the 21 islands in the famed Pacific archipelago—said the tortoises were found during a routine inspection by customs officials on Sunday morning. The cargo was being sent illegally by smugglers to the port city of Guayaquil, which lies 700 miles to the east. The tortoise were detected by operators on an X-ray machine in the airport, who noticed “irregularities” in the suitcase, which was said to contain “souvenirs....

The baby elephant was born on 23 July in the western Rakhine state to a 33-year-old elephant called Zar Nan Hla, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation-Forestry said in a statement. White elephants are extremely rare. It is usually a result of albinism—a condition caused by a lack of pigment in the skin. The Ministry of Natural Resources said the elephant possessed seven of the eight characteristics associated with white elephants....

A team from global animal welfare non-profit Four Paws traveled to San Luis province in western Argentina to collect the four Bengal tigers before transferring them to the LIONSROCK Big Cat Sanctuary near Bethlehem in South Africa. The tigers had been confined to the abandoned train carriage, which is barely larger than the size of two parking spaces, for years. In 2007, a traveling circus had asked a local farmer in San Luis to take care of two tigers for a period of six months....
