On November 9, Pfizer announced that their version of the shot was “more than 90 percent effective” at preventing folks from contracting the coronavirus. 43,538 participants were used in the study, and there were only 94 confirmed cases of the coronavirus. At the time, Newsweek reported that “Pfizer expects to produce up to 50 million vaccine doses globally in 2020 and up to 1.3 billion doses in 2021.”

A week later on Monday, Moderna revealed that their experimental coronavirus vaccine was over 94 percent effective. Over 30,000 people participated in their trial of the shot, and 95 participants were diagnosed with the coronavirus. Of the 95 who contracted COVID-19, 90 of them received a placebo. They also have a plan to mass distribute the vaccine as soon as possible.

Naturally, the internet responded to the seemingly-competing vaccines with memes.

One person compared the vaccines to Emily and Andie’s rivalry in The Devil Wears Prada, who both worked harder than ever before to accompany their boss to Paris Fashion Week.

Another person likened it to a gif of Jerry Seinfeld and Jason Alexander’s George Costanza getting into a petty display of throwing hands. “Behind-the-scenes view of the Pfizer and Moderna comms teams preparing press releases this week…” they wrote.

News of Pfizer surpassing Moderna’s vaccine effectiveness rate was also similar to the brutally awkward scene in Bridesmaids where Kristen Wiig and Rose Byrne try to outdo each other singing at Maya Rudolph’s engagement dinner.

One user likened it to the vaccine race to an episode of the reality competition series, RuPaul’s Drag Race. “Ladies: Prior to tonight, you were asked to prepare a vaccine for coronavirus,” the wrote. “Moderna, Pfizer, the time has come. Good luck, and don’t f**k it up.”

Someone shared a video of two children dancing up a storm, comparing it to the pharmaceutical companies “competing for the most effective Covid Vaccine.” It’s exhausting, to say the least.

Someone said the vaccine efficacy of both companies was like the meme of Spidermans (Spidermen?) pointing at each other.

One tweet perfectly captured the back-and-forth updates about Pfizer and Moderna: with a gif of cats playing ping-pong.

In the meantime, we will be waiting for the FDA to approve a safe and effective vaccine.
