Rory McIlroy, Jordan Spieth and Zach Johnson were on the course chasing the leaders. Meanwhile, players were carving birdies out of the rolling terrain of the Irish links-style course near Sheboygan, Wis.

Early leaders Hideki Matsuyama, Robert Streb, Ryan Moore and Paul Casey were 3 under par about 10 a.m. ET. There were 28 golfers under par in the morning’s competition.

UPDATE: Dustin Johnson finished at 6 under, and there was a surprise contender behind him. J.B. Holmes was a stroke behind Johnson through 17 before falling to 4 under. New Zealand’s Danny Lee was right there with the leaders, while six other players stood at 4 under. Among them: Matt Kuchar, Jason Day and Martin Kaymer.

“It was beautiful conditions,” Kuchar said. “This was definitely the time to take advantage of the golf course.”
