General manager Ruben Amaro Jr. says Friday that Galvis is being treated with antibiotics, both orally and through an IV. He is being checked for Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), a staph bacteria resistant to many antibiotics.

UPDATE: Amaro confirmed that Galvis was diagnosed with MRSA late Friday afternoon.

Amaro says Galvis would open the season on the disabled list.

The 24-year-old Galvis cut his left knee earlier this month in a Grapefruit League game. He had to have an abscess removed from the wound earlier this week and complications arose when an infection was detected.

Galvis was a favorite in camp to earn a roster spot as the Phillies top utility infielder.
