The Phillies are 26-48 this season and in last place in the NL East, but that’s not a surprising development. The roster is in the process (a slow, sometimes agonizing process for Phillies fans) of being reconstructed and the Phillies were expected to occupy the bottom spot in that division this season.
The record this year is hardly Sandberg’s issue, which is why the timing of the move is somewhat surprising. Sandberg took over as the Phillies’ manager late in the 2013 season and has a career record in Philadelphia of 119-159.
