Veteran play-by-play announcer Mike “Doc” Emrick is a survivor of prostate cancer, and Olczyk is receiving treatment for colon cancer. Emrick told viewers of McGuire’s condition Wednesday prior to NBC Sports Network’s broadcast of Wild vs. Blackhawks.

“Doc has been an amazing resource,” McGuire told USA Today. “I’m so grateful to the NBC hockey family. NBC (people) have been phenomenal.”

Olczyk is working a reduced schedule and was not in the booth for Wednesday’s game. He has, of course, been communicating with his longtime TV partner.

“You got to fight and stay positive and I said, ‘I agree.’” McGuire told USA Today of Olczyk’s advice.

McGuire’s immediate goal is to broadcast from the Winter Olympics in South Korea next month. He told USA Today he opted for a quick surgery for what doctors determined was Stage 1 cancer so he could return to work in time.

“I feel fine. I feel great,” McGuire told USA Today.
