Morgan was referring to the news the Trump administration had announced earlier that Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the leader of ISIS, had been killed—which happened on the same day Trump was booed during Game 5 of the World Series at Nationals Park in Washington, D.C.
Morgan appeared perplexed at why Americans would boo the president in response to “a brilliant operation by American armed forces, a courageous, bold order to conduct the mission from the President of the United States, and a moment for America to show the world that when they said they’d get tough with terrorism, they meant it,” the British television personality said.
He also told an anecdote about the widespread jubilation he witnessed in New York City when Osama bin Laden was captured.
“This was a unified response from a country jubilant as seeing the end and grisly demise of the leader of Al-Qaeda,” Morgan said.
He then went on to argue the ways in which Baghdadi was worse than bin Laden.
“Baghdadi, I would argue, legitimately I think, has committed worse atrocities than bin Laden. He may not be as an emotive a name, but certainly the work done under his name of ISIS has been barbaric, despicable, heinous on any level,” said Morgan.
“Let’s not forget what this guy was,” he continued, calling Baghdadi “one of the worst terrorists in modern times.”
“So yesterday should have been a great day for American and a great day for the world. Instead the narrative is, let’s try and find where Trump went wrong in the way he spoke about this. Let’s try and find a way that makes Trump look bad, and by doing that, the message sent to the world is ‘America is bad!’”
Morgan won the seventh installment of Donald Trump’s reality show, Celebrity Apprentice, in 2008. Celebrity candidates competed for the title of “Best Business Brain” and donated their proceeds to charity.
Morgan also “formally applied” to be Trump’s Chief of Staff by way of an open letter published by the Daily Mail in 2018.
“You might not immediately recognize what qualities I have for such a massive job in your administration…” he wrote. “But the key thing is to have someone at your side that understands you, has known you a long time, likes you and commands your respect.”
Carlson and Morgan did not speak to any other reasons Americans might boo the president during the show, but the host reminded his audience that Morgan is not a Trump “acolyte” or “suck-up in any sense at all.”
