The show isn’t exactly a revival: call it a retrieval. It’s based on the 1945 movie, with the only score that Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II wrote directly for a film. “State Fair” is no breakthrough musical, but codirectors James Hammerstein (son of) and Randy Skinner provide a textbook example of how to do an honest, get-your-money’s-worth touring show. Songs like “It Might as Well Be Spring” and “It’s a Grand Night for Singing” seem like part of America’s DNA code. Gene Kelly-ish Scott Wise is a knockout dancer. Donna McKechnie, the great show dancer of her generation (“Company,” “A Chorus Line”), ignites the stage. The corn’s not as high as an elephant’s eye, but it’s juicy.
