Those days are over, according to the Interface Group, the producers of Comdex. Starting with the Toronto Comdex next monthmc, Interface is banning sexually explicit material. Milt Herbert, senior vice president of Interface, says major exhibitors, including Microsoft Corp., complained that soft porn distracted from software.
Herbert says he anticipates legal challenges from some exhibitors of X-rated material, but he expects the ban to stand up in court. The contract between exhibitors and the Interface Group already states that the show’s producers can remove any display that they consider offensive. But don’t look for a Hollywood-style Board of Censors at the next Comdex. Herbert says Interface won’t screen anything. They’ll just pull the plug on exhibitors who show up with the wrong stuff.
