But the attention is unlikely to end. Eighty-six percent of those surveyed for the latest NEWSWEEK Poll gave Powell a favorable rating, and almost half said they would like him to run for office. But friends insist that he harbors no political ambitions and would be emotionally unsuited to the campaign trail. “Politics isn’t his thing,” says a confidant. “It’s like a fancy suit. He can imagine trying it on, but it just doesn’t fit.”
For now, there’s no indication Bush intends to make a switch. With Bush’s authorization, White House chief of staff John Sununu disclosed “a Bush-Quayle ticket is a lock solid.” Sununu also said that Powell has asked to serve another two years as JCS chairman when his term expires in September. After that, colleagues say, Powell would probably like a job in private industry. “He wants to go run something and make it work,” says a close friend.
