The winning numbers for Saturday were 1, 11, 21, 25 and 54, with a Powerball of 7 and a Power Play multiplier of 2X, which would instantly double a participant’s winnings. According to officials, no players won the estimated $239.9 million jackpot, meaning the top prize now rises.

The next draw is scheduled for January 9 and has an estimated jackpot of $258 million, which has a cash value of approximately $175.5 million.

Winners can either select the winnings to be handed over as an annuity or a full cash payment. If the annuity option is chosen the winner receives 30 graduated payments, which increase by five percent every time the winnings are deposited.

In yesterday’s draw, Powerball says 26 players matched four numbers and the Powerball, which results in a $50,000 prize each. A much higher 573 people got four balls right, which gave each a payout of $100 each, while 161 of those people doubled the amount using the X2 Power Play.

All prizes are cash amounts except the grand prize.

The process is simple: the cost of entry is $2. Players choose five numbers from 1 to 69 for the white balls and one number from 1 to 26 for the red Powerball. The Power Play feature is added for an additional $1 per draw, but it can only be relied upon to multiply non-jackpot results.

That top prize starts at $40 million and increases if no-one claims the correct numbers. At the base sum, players have a fixed one in 24.9 chance of winning a prize, Powerball suggests.

Only days ago, the firm announced a man from Maine became the “first Powerball millionaire of the year” during a live broadcast on New Year’s Eve. “I can’t even believe it, this is unreal,” read a comment attributed to the randomly-chosen winner, Blaine Marston, of Passadumkeag.

In November last year, a player who was not named matched six numbers and won a $150 million jackpot, which held a cash option of $104.8 million. The ticket was sold in California. It was the seventh time the top prize was won last year, Powerball said in a release.

The jackpot was won in Wisconsin in a draw on March 27 ($768.4 million), North Carolina ($344.6 million) in a draw on June 1, Tennessee ($198 million) in a draw on July 13, New York ($148 million) in a draw in August, New York ($80 million) in a draw in September, and Michigan ($80 million) in a draw the same month.
