The Powerball jackpot was worth an estimated $60 million with a cash option of $40.3 million. Nobody won the jackpot as nobody matched all five balls and the Powerball. One person did match all five balls, however, and won a $1 million prize.
Ten people matched four balls and the Powerball so each won a prize of $50,000. Additionally, 196 people matched four balls and won $100 each. A further 60 people matched four balls and used the powerplay, which doubled their prizes to $200 each.
There are nine tiers of prizes, from the jackpot to $4. Players can win a prize by matching anything from just the Powerball, to all five balls and the Powerball.
As nobody won the jackpot, the Powerball jackpot is currently estimated to be $70 million with a cash value of $47 million. The next draw will take place on Sunday, November 17, at 10.59 p.m. ET.
How to play the Powerball?
Players must purchase a Powerball ticket for $2 per play. Then, players select five numbers between one and 69 for the white balls and then one number between one and 26 for the red Powerball. Powerball players can choose the numbers or let the lottery terminal choose them at random. Players can choose the same set of numbers in multiple consecutive drawings with multi-play or advance play.
There is also the option to purchase the Power Play for an additional $1 which will multiply the prize money by 2, 3, 4, 5 or 10 times. The Power Play number is randomly selected before each drawing and the X10 Power Play is only active when the jackpot annuity is $150 million or less. The Match 5 prize is $1 million, but with Power Play it is always $2 million, and the jackpot is never affected by the Power Play. Powerball is played in 44 states, Washington D.C., Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
What happens when you win the lottery?
The jackpot starts at $40 million but grows each time it is not won. A jackpot winner can choose to claim their prize as an annuity, which is paid as an initial payment followed by 29 annual graduated payments which increase by 5 percent each year. After 30 years the winner will have received the entire jackpot. Winners can also choose to take the jackpot prize as one lump sum, which is of a lesser value than the jackpot but is paid in one payment.
What are the odds of winning the lottery?
The odds of winning a prize on the Powerball lottery is always on in 24.9, regardless of the size of the jackpot or the number of tickets sold.
