According to the Baltimore Sun, Homeboykris collapsed after winning the day’s first race while on his way back to the barn from the winner’s circle. As a 9-1 longshot, he had expended a lot of energy to win a close race down the stretch. He will be taken for an autopsy to New Bolton Center, the Pennsylvania hospital where late 2006 Derby winner Barbaro had leg surgery. Homeboyrkis, a horse bred in Maryland, finished 16th in the 2010 Derby.

Three races later at Pimlico, Pramedya went down on the final turn, hitting the turf with a left-front mid-cannon bone fracture and had to be euthanized on the track. Her jockey, Daniel Centeno, suffered a broken right collarbone from the fall and had to be treated at Baltimore’s nearby Sinai Hospital.

Pramedya’s fatal accident comes a decade after Barbaro broke his league in the Preakness. She shares the same owner, Lael Stables.
