The woman was attacked by a man on a Market-Frankford Line Night Owl Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) bus near 8th and Market streets, in Philadelphia, at about 1:45 a.m. on Sunday.

Police arrested a man on Monday on suspicion of punching the pregnant woman in the face after she refused to give him her seat, according to NBC affiliate WCAU.

A SEPTA spokesperson told the network: “Police said the suspect approached the woman, who was seated, and demanded that she give her seat to him.

“When she refused, he punched her in the face and pushed her, then fled.”

Following the assault, the bus driver notified transit police although the suspect had already fled by that time.

SEPTA told the network that the woman was taken to a nearby hospital where she was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

The transit agency added that the woman was two months pregnant at the time of the attack.

SEPTA riders told 6ABC they were not surprised the attack happened, but that they were still concerned by it.

Donica Wilson told the network: “It definitely makes me feel more nervous. I just bought pepper spray the other day just to make sure I’m safe because I do ride it pretty often.”

Rachel Matthews said: “I kind of purposefully pick where I sit. I try to keep my back against walls just to make myself feel a bit safer.”

Anyone with information is urged to call SEPTA Transit Police at (215) 580-8111.

Newsweek has contacted the Philadelphia Police Department for comment.

According to the 2020 SEPTA operating budget, 223.5 million passengers made trips using the service.

It added total passenger miles exceeding 980 million in that year.

Newsweek has previously reported on pregnant women being assaulted in harrowing attacks across the U.S.

Earlier this year, a Tennessee woman allegedly broke an unborn baby’s arm when she attacked her pregnant niece, according to an affidavit.

Marilyn Hampton is alleged to have attacked her niece in Whitehaven on January 4, according to CBS.

The affidavit stated the victim had been in an argument with her sister when Hampton, her aunt, joined in.

According to WREG the victim was five months pregnant at the time and alleged her aunt pushed her over before Hampton’s sons also joined in the attack.

According to the affidavit, the victim said she was “choked, hit, kicked, and knocked down.”

When the victim was transported to the hospital, doctors told her that one of her unborn baby’s arms was broken during the altercation.
