On the official PlayStation blog, questions regarding the PS5 and what peripherals work with it were answered. But the question that affects the most gamers is how the PS4 Dualshock controller plays with the PS5. According to the blog, “the DualShock 4 wireless controller and PlayStation officially licensed third-party gamepad controllers will work with supported PS4 games.”
Simply, the DualShock 4 will work for PS4 games that the PS5 can play, but there’s no mention of if PS5 games support the controller. That question is answered later on—the blog states that it doesn’t.
When the question of if the DualShock 4 controller can work with PS5 games was asked, the blog answered “No, we believe that PS5 games should take advantage of the new capabilities and features we’re bringing to the platform, including the features of DualSense wireless controller.”
The new DualSense controller will arrive along with the upcoming PS5 console and Sony hopes it will bring a more immersive experience. Introduced in early April, the DualSense controller’s main new feature is the haptic feedback, which adds a variety of powerful sensations you’ll feel when you play. Some examples are the slow grittiness of driving a car through mud and incorporating adaptive triggers into the L2 and R2 buttons so you can feel when you draw back on a bow to shoot an arrow.
Gamers will become acquainted to this new controller when it releases, but if you’re looking to have multiple controllers for your PS5 be ready to plop down some cash.
As for other peripherals, PlayStation confirmed how some will work with the PS5.
Specialty peripherals, such as officially licensed racing wheels, arcade sticks, and flight sticks, will work with PS5 games and supported PS4 games. The Platinum and Gold Wireless Headsets, as well as third-party headsets that connect via USB port or audio jack, will work on PS5 (the headset companion app is not compatible with PS5). Both the PS Move Motion Controllers and the PlayStation VR Aim Controller will work with supported PS VR games on PS5.
The PlayStation Camera will also work with the PS5 for supported VR games. An adaptor will be required, but will come at new additional cost to VR users. The method to obtain this adaptor will be revealed in the future.
